What happens during the test

  • Authority staff check whether roof drains, sump pumps, and driveway or area drains are connected to the sanitary sewer.
  • A camera goes through the sewer lateral, from the outside trap to the main sewer, to look for cracks and leaks.
  • Staff also check that vent caps are in good shape and that any sewer manhole on the property is uncovered and reachable.

If the test fails

A failed sewer lateral must be replaced or relined, with limited exceptions for spot repairs, by a registered master plumber. The Authority pays $1,000 toward a full replacement or relining, plus $5 per foot over 100 feet. If repairs can't be done before closing, the Authority may allow them after closing with money held in escrow, usually with 30 days to finish. Call 412-257-5100.
